Faroese trawler pipe relined

Less than two weeks

The Faroese fishing vessel Tróndur í Gøtu from 2010, measuring 81.6-m long and 16.6-m wide, had all its leaky pipes renewed using high-tech cured-in-place pipe-liners. The pipes run, for example, through bulkheads and fuel tanks and discharged oil in the fish tanks.

“It would have been a completely insurmountable project and a huge operation, if all the pipes had to be replaced with new ones. It would also have taken significantly longer and cost at least 6-7 times as much,” explains Jóan Pauli Jacobsen, Chief Engineer of the company Vardin, which has one of the largest fleets of fishing vessels in the Faroe Islands.

Renovation was carried out on 17 selected 6-inch pressure pipes, where cavitation corrosion had been detected, particularly on bends. 400 m3 of seawater per hour are pumped through the pipes – from the pump house mid-ship at the bottom of the ship, with piping through the fuel tank, to the ship’s fish and ballast tanks.

“Obviously, time is also an important factor for us. By renewing the pipes with cured-in-place pipe liners, Tróndur í Gøtu only needed a few days on land, even though it was a comprehensive process. But fitting cured-in-place pipe liners proved to be an extremely smooth process,” says Jóan Pauli Jacobsen.

Since it has never been done before and with a vision of being able to renew all types of pipes we inserted our customized CIPP liners into the existing, corroded pipes, thereby forming new pipes within the existing ones. Aarsleff’s project manager, Flemming Andersen, stated and continued, our cured-in-place pipe liners are particularly suitable for ships, because the pipes are frequently difficult to access.

“It goes without saying that access is tricky in the tanks and in the pump room 10 meters below deck, but we have the experience and the equipment that enable us to cure in place under extremely pressurized conditions. The work was done in two weeks, while Tróndur í Gøtu was in the shipyard in Skáli in the Faroe Islands for repairs,” explains Flemming Andersen.

Proven up to 100-year service life

Similarly, with the pipes on Tróndur í Gøtu, we adapted the socks to accommodate the oleaginous products that have leaked from the oil tanks into the waste pipes between pumps and fish and ballast tanks” says Flemming Andersen.

Aarsleff Pipe Technology operates in three different segments – residential, industrial and institutional – and has now developed a range of products and methods for the renewal of all types of pipe installations.

“With our certified, cured-in-place pipe-liner solutions, involving LED, UV, water or steam, we can renew virtually any existing pipe installation, regardless of profile, length and diameter,” says Flemming Andersen.

Aarsleff Pipe Technology manufactures all its cured-in-place pipe liners at its own high-tech factory in Hasselager near Aarhus. In addition, custom-built plants are used at the actual workplace, functioning almost like small rolling factories.
